This short self-drive itinerary takes you off the beaten track to some of the less visited regions of the top of the South Island. Enjoy a soak in the thermal hot pools at Hanmer Springs (only a short drive north of Christchurch) before driving across country to the east coast with the option to view the whales at Kaikoura. Driving through the stunning vineyards of the Marlborough region, you will then have a relaxing three night stay in the Nelson region, staying only a stone's throw from the Abel Tasman National Park - with time to relax and enjoy your magnificant surroundings at the Riwaka Resurgence Lodge. Enjoy a full day in the park with a cruise and walk included in your tour. There is much to see and do in the Nelson region and you may wish to extend your stay before heading south towards the West Coast. Punakaiki is a must-see and is best known for its Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. This tour includes an overnight stay at the Punakaiki Resort located right on the beach in complete harmony with its natural environment. Returning to Christchurch across the Southern Alps via Arthur's Pass, we include an overnight stay at the Orari Bed & Breakfast in the heart of the city.
